Lake Powell Engagements

Lake Powell Engagements

I am such a huge advocate for making your wedding, engagements, vow renewals, fill in the blanks, into more than just a day, but an experience.  It takes away the stress of needing everything to be so perfect because what you are doing isn't for a picture, it's for a feeling, a memory, a moment in time that you can look back on and remember more than just a photo,
it's a weekend of memories,
a meaningful place,
the person you shared this with.

My husband and I got married on the Lost Coast - a rugged, mostly inaccessible part of the Northern California coast where we had both been on extended backpacking trips and it had become one of our favorite places in the world. Now, every time I go back to that place, I can't help but feel overwhelmed by our memories from that weekend and I relive it all over again from beginning to end. Tears stream down my face, and I feel everything.

I think the place that you choose to document your love is a big deal, it holds those memories just as much as the pictures do. These two did just that.

Jillian + Eric spent the week road tripping through Arizona + Utah and I met up with them in the middle of their trip for some epic engagement photos in the desert. We camped out in our cars above Lake Powell so we could wake up before the sun and capture their love in an incredible place. It was everything + more than I expected, and we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves. We spent the whole day together and it was unforgettable.

Oregon Coast Adventure

Oregon Coast Adventure

A rainy day on the Oregon Coast with the sweetest, most adventurous and carefree couple who love and enjoy each other like no other.
A little rain didn't stop these two from having the best day ever.

Patagonia Adventure

Patagonia Adventure

In January, Rich and I went on an adventure of a lifetime.  Patagonia is a place that I have heard of  and knew it was as beautiful as ever, but never in my wildest dreams did I imagine myself actually going there. After long days and multiple flights, we finally made it to the most southern part of the world I had ever been to and our flight landed right next to the craziest blue lake with glaciers, mountains, and alpacas running around.  It's pretty surreal.

Laid-back Yosemite Elopement

Laid-back Yosemite Elopement

I only got to go to Yosemite twice last year, both were for weddings that were within a week of each other and both times were so, so different from each other it was crazy.  Yosemite in the fall is just breathtaking, the roads are clear, kids are back in school, the leaves are changing colors, and you have this whole magical landscape all to yourself.

Valerie and Vedran are probably the most easy going couple of all time and hanging out with them and their east coast family who were experiencing Yosemite for the first time, shot gunning canned wine in the valley, was the best ending to an amazing summer.  You know when you meet people and you think - we would absolutely be friends if you lived in the same place as me - well it happened to me countless times this year and these two are no exception.  They planned their whole day to just take it as it comes and enjoy each other in one of the most beautiful places and that's exactly what they did.

Oregon Mountain Engagement Session

Oregon Mountain Engagement Session

I'll just start out by saying if you don't know who Dawn is, then you probably should.  She's an amazingly driven photographer who lives in Oregon and has a huge love for adventure and the outdoors.  I was so honored when she asked me to shoot her engagement session and her plan to go into the mountains and adventure around for an afternoon was so perfectly her, I didn't expect anything less.

We drove out towards Sisters, OR, stopping along the way when we found pretty forests, braving some epic winds that left our hair in one giant dreadlock, and laughing so much my abs were sore by the end of the day.  If you can't tell through the photos, Dusty is a character and these two together is an experience to be had.

It was so cool to be a part of their story, not only because I think Dawn is the sweetest/coolest/most bad-ass photographer, but because as a wedding photographer, you know the ins and outs of the whole industry, and every decision you make for your OWN wedding is well-informed and thought out.  That being said, they are doing everything exactly the way they want to, no outside pressure or following obligation, but making it just about the two of them, and I love this so so much.

Sunrise Yosemite Elopement

Sunrise Yosemite Elopement

These two had their big, traditional wedding planned for the end of the year, but in the midst of planning it, they caved and decided to elope instead and have a reception afterwards and I was so happy when they called to tell me the news!  They decided to elope in Yosemite in the fall when the tourists had gone, but the park is as beautiful as ever with glowing orange leaves and frost covered fields.  We woke up while it was still dark out and drove into the park to a field where Half Dome was towering behind us and with thermals on under their wedding clothes, they had their first look.

From the first time I talked to these two, I knew right away that they were the most relaxed, down to earth couple and we would all have so much fun together.  They had found this spot on Canon Beach where the tide goes down far enough to access a different, secluded beach, and their dream was to have a little private table setting, in the water, as the sun was going down.  It was nothing short of amazing.
Then we spent the rest of the daylight dancing in the waves and I just stood back and captured these two playful souls be together just as they are.

Horseshoe Bend + Antelope Canyon Elopement

Horseshoe Bend + Antelope Canyon Elopement

We started our adventure in Vegas, driving out to Zion National Park for a first look at sunrise, but kind of left late and ended up in the full desert August sun aka 100 degrees.  Not to worry, we wiped off all our sweat in Lake Powell for a little afternoon dip. Addie clipped up her hair and got in too.  This is the most BA couple every by the way, they are nuclear scientists and I hardly felt worthy to be hanging with them.

The big event was their personal vows they wrote to each other that they planned to say while the sun set over Horseshoe Bend.  These two had initially wanted to elope, but realized that having a wedding was just too important for all their family + friends, which I think is the case for most people.  So instead, they met up with me a week before their wedding to say personal vows in the desert on the side of a cliff and it was nothing short of incredible.  We all cried.

The next morning, we timed it just right and went to Antelope Canyon right when the sun was peaking through.  The adventure of the year.

Havasu Falls Adventurous Engagement

When Tina + Matt suggested the idea of doing their engagement session here, I didn’t hesitate for a second, and we went straight to work, sorting out permits and travel details. The location itself is no easy feat. Driving from LA on only a few hours of sleep, Tina + Matt met us at the trailhead and we hiked in 10 miles to the most breathtaking waterfall we could ever imagine. The water was so unbelievably blue and next to the red desert rocks it’s like no other place in the entire world. We slept out under the stars, giddy as ever to shoot the next day. We woke up early before the other hikers arrived and had the whole place to ourselves. The whole trip was such an unforgettable experience, and the most inspiring place to capture their love and spend time together. This is definitely my favorite shoot of all time.

Jeremy + Michaela

Two of the best people I know.  We parked as far as we could in Lassen National Park (the roads aren't fully open for the season yet) and walked into a meadow full of mosquitoes and incredible views.  We spent the night just hanging out, talking about life, barefoot and drinking beer till the sun went down.  This is what summer nights are made of.
